Eligibility requirements
For your pet to be eligible for insurance coverage, there are five criteria that must be met. Your pet must:
- Be micro-chipped
- Residing in the same premises as you on a regular basis
- Be at least 8 weeks – no more than 9 years old at the insurance enrolment date
- Not be a working dog e.g. a guide dog or a guard dog
- Not a dog or cat used for breeding
To ensure that your dog or cat receives insurance coverage without the hassle of applying and facing denials, we recommend reading the policy wording thoroughly before purchasing any pet insurance plan.
What to look for when reading a pet insurance policy wording
Consider looking into the following:
- Eliminate plans that don’t cover your pet type i.e. dog, cat, etc.
- Does the plan exclude certain specific insurance coverage needs you require?
- Are there eligibility clauses that don’t match e.g. requiring your pet to be micro-chipped?
- Does the plan offer the coverage you need most e.g. loss or accidental damage?
- Is the plan affordable to you?
- Are you getting the best value out of your pet insurance plan?
- Does the insurance require co-payment at a percentage and deductible that’s acceptable to you?
Always ensure that you have a level of understanding of the benefits, exclusions, and potential out-of-pocket expenses you might have to cover.
Policy exclusions
Based on PetCare’s website page, these are the following exclusions that apply for the insurance policy:
- Theft due to intentional, neglectful, or preventable acts
- Liability due to intentional, neglectful, or preventable acts
- Pre-existing, hereditary, congenital, and skin conditions your pet may suffer from
- Day-to-day care e.g. vaccinations, vitamins, supplements, grooming, training.
- Dental-related issues e.g. damage to teeth and gums, unless due to an accident
- Illnesses in relation to endoparasites or ectoparasites, hip dysplasia, rabies
- Elective procedures and treatments e.g. nail clipping, tail docking, debarking, etc.
